Lost, Season 1: Episodes 19-21

:
In 2009, Peter watched through the first five seasons of Lost for the first time, live-tweeting all thoughts as he had them. Nicknames were created, awards were invented and dispensed, and predictions were made. If you’ve never seen Lost (or even if it’s been a while), these may not make much sense.

Lost
:
[[Episode 19]]
Peter:
Pre-accident John.
Peter:
Another Locke flashback episode!!
Peter:
Took me a while to work out how cool that was.
Peter:
The lady Locke just served in the toy store – is she the old lady from Not Another Teen Movie?
Peter:
I don’t think brute force is going to get you into the hatch guys. It’s going to be something more abstract, like “hope” or “innocent blood”
Peter:
Oh no! Locke can’t start to lose feelings in his legs. He just won my “greatest character” award!!
Peter:
Prediction: Locke defeats paralysation simply by battling it hand-to-hand.
Peter:
I’m starting to wish this wasn’t his episode. When he’s a supporting role, he can just kick arse. When he’s the protagonist, he has to face conflict.
Peter:
Locke’s mother: “You don’t have a father. You were immaculately conceived.”
Peter:
I KNEW IT! Locke IS a god!
Peter:
Oh, of course! Looked Locke’s mother up; she’s the psychiatrist from the beginning of Cruel Intentions. She’s great in that.
Peter:
Woah. Even Locke’s nightmares are awesome.
Peter:
Lost has a lot of:
Peter:
-Australians
Peter:
-One-armed Australians
Peter:
-Psychiatric wards
Peter:
-Dark backstories
Peter:
-Mysteries that won’t be solved any time soon
Peter:
Good casting. Locke’s father looks just like him.
Peter:
Oh. Locke having a history of hunting makes him considerably less cool. I preferred it when his skillz were just sheer willpower.
Peter:
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not retracting his award. Just…wish they’d have just left him alone. I was fine with him being massively great.
Peter:
Prediction: Locke donates his kidney. Locke’s father dies, and his kidney leaps out and returns to him.
Peter:
Haha, I love it when we get glimpses of the non-main characters on the island. I forget they’re there most of the time.
Peter:
Main characters:
Peter:
-Jack
Peter:
-Kate
Peter:
-Sawyer
Peter:
-Locke
Peter:
-Boom
Peter:
-Jin
Peter:
-Sun
Peter:
-Michael
Peter:
-Walt
Peter:
-Shannon
Peter:
-Hurley
Peter:
-Sayid
Peter:
-Charlie
Peter:
-Claire
Peter:
That’s 14. That leaves 20-odd other people on the island.
Peter:
Other than Steve and Rose, I don’t think any of them have names.
Peter:
Meanwhile, in the episode, Boom and Locke have found the plane, and Locke’s not walking any more.
Peter:
Locke and his father are about to get surgery. Prediction: Jack’s Dad is the surgeon in charge, he botches it.
Peter:
Predictions for what’s in the plane:
Peter:
-some bodies
Peter:
-more guns
Peter:
-explosives
Peter:
-fashion accessories
Peter:
-clues
Peter:
-a journal with the numbers in it
Peter:
Boom just had a body land on him.
Peter:
Oh, wow! Plane’s full of drugs. Enough to keep Charlie high for at least another 2 seasons.
Peter:
Also, a working radio. Much more exciting than drugs. Well, to everyone but Charlie.
Peter:
I never thought I’d say this, but shut up Locke! I want to know what the person on the other end of the radio was saying.
Peter:
Sawyer gets Least likeable this episode, just for being ornery.
Peter:
Boom can have Most likeable.
Peter:
Oh wow, I think Locke just got scammed for his kidney.
Peter:
Locke gets back all his cool points. Vulnerability = more likeable character.
Peter:
If I were Locke, I would wage an unholy war against my father. Save up all that willpower I know you have, and kick his arse one day.
Peter:
Come on, surely anguish will open the hatch.
Peter:
Oh, wow. It did.
Peter:
CRAP. End of episode!! I’m (obvously) shifting Least likeable to Locke’s Dad, and giving Most intriguing to Locke. (particularly his faith)
Peter:
[[Episode 20]]
Peter:
Previously on is all about the hatch & Boom’s accident.
Peter:
Came up with theory while reading over my notes so far:
Peter:
Walt is somehow affected by the numbers as well. Maybe not as powerfully, but. his step-dad talked about how “bad things happened” when he was around. Sounds like a candidate for number fever if you ask me!
Peter:
I am officially calling the number bad luck “Number Fever” from now on.
Peter:
“His lung collapsed!” – I can’t think of a single situation where that’s good news. Maybe if the lung was holding up the Axis of Evil?
Peter:
Jack just promised to save Boom.
Peter:
My prediction: He does. No main characters die on the island. That’s for supporting cast, like Scott.
Peter:
I really like that this off-hand raft suggestion is actually happening. Justifies some people still living on the beach. Good writings.
Peter:
Sawyer may be an arse, but when it’s an emergency, he jumps in and does what needs to be done.
Peter:
Like Bob Jelly from Seachange, or Alan Shore from Boston Legal
Peter:
Jack’s flashbacks seem to be completely unrelated to the ep so far. Hope they tie it in somehow.
Peter:
Hey, it’s Denise!!! Denise from Boston Legal is marrying Jack’s friend.
Peter:
Prediction:
Peter:
-he loves her.
Peter:
-they’re sleeping together
Peter:
Okay, it’s sort of tying in already. I think Jack just undislocated Boom’s leg.
Peter:
Or just pulled on it for fun.
Peter:
Undislocated? Relocated?
Peter:
“Oh god. You’re having your baby.”
Peter:
This is the second time now. Ever heard of the girl who cried wolf, Claire?
Peter:
Mysteries no-one is dealing with:
Peter:
-Ethan’s origins/motivations
Peter:
-The black rock
Peter:
-The numbers
Peter:
-Adam and Eve
Peter:
Mysteries no-one has dealt with for a long time:
Peter:
-Jack’s Dad’s body
Peter:
-the monster
Peter:
-why the plane crashed
Peter:
-why everyone survived
Peter:
-POLAR BEARS
Peter:
Mysteries that people are actually dealing with:
Peter:
-the hatch
Peter:
Holy crap, Jack plays the piano as well? Tick another one off the sexy checklist.
Peter:
Mysteries that have been solved:
Peter:
-the 16 year-old French signal
Peter:
Ah ha! Denise just kissed Jack. Word of advice: never marry your best friend’s ex-fiance. At some point, you have to choose: bros or hos?
Peter:
Jin has the same attitude as Sawyer – he can be a real tool, but when it’s an emergency, he’ll even break his vow of not-talking-to-his-wife.
Peter:
Seriously tempted to give Locke “least likeable” this episode. He’s been a bit of a wank, and everyone else has just been so great.
Peter:
Boom, dying, is crying out “Shannon…” – cut to Shannon and Sayid making out on the beach.
Peter:
Well, not dying.
Peter:
He’ll survive.
Peter:
Jin’s non-English is surprisingly comforting.
Peter:
If I were having a baby, I’d be comforted.
Peter:
His grin helps a lot.
Peter:
Oh please, please tell me you’re going to cut off Boom’s leg.
Peter:
Jack’s Dad is getting a lot of screen-time this season. He must be important in some way, whether in terms of plot or just Jack’s character.
Peter:
Predictions:
Peter:
-Jack’s Dad shows up on the island before the end of the season.
Peter:
-He is a master of hand-to-hand combat
Peter:
-But still an alcoholic
Peter:
Oh, wow. He’s going to cut it off using a door. Gruesome.
Peter:
“What about the axe?”
Peter:
“We can’t use the axe.”
Peter:
Why??
Peter:
Meanwhile, Claire is trying to stop having this baby halfway through labour. I suspect that she hasn’t thought this through at all.
Peter:
Prediction:
Peter:
-the baby comes out and it’s Jack’s father
Peter:
If only Boom was Australian. #theabundanceofaustraliansmissinglimbsonlost
Peter:
I haven’t been talking about it much, but Lost is really nicely lit a great deal of the time. Scenes at night lit by fire especially.
Peter:
Jack and Denise are at the altar.
Peter:
Probably should have mentioned you couldn’t think of any vows before now, dude.
Peter:
This is either going to be the most horrible breakup imaginable, or incredibly sweet and romantic.
Peter:
My money’s on romantic, for the subversion.
Peter:
Yup, incredibly incredibly romantic. Although his voice did do the nasal whiney thing halfway through the vows.
Peter:
No! Don’t delay! Chop the leg off!!
Peter:
If Arrested Development taught us anything, it’s that missing limbs are hilarious.
Peter:
Awww, the Australian had a baby. Fortunately this island doesn’t have any dingos.
Peter:
The kid is a male, ruining its chances of hooking up with Walt. (unless Walt turns out to be this show’s first gay character)
Peter:
I had high hopes for Boon and Locke being gay, and having a nice sort of adventurey romance. No such luck.
Peter:
…did Boom just die? You can’t kill Boom. He had all sorts of storylines going on.
Peter:
Oh I know what’s happened: The Island is a closed system.
Peter:
You can’t give birth without killing off someone else.
Peter:
Should’ve cut off the leg…
Peter:
Possible names for the baby:
Peter:
-Boom (good taste)
Peter:
-Ethan (incredibly bad taste)
Peter:
At least Boom got to sleep with his step-sister before he died. Everyone should do that at least once in their life.
Peter:
“Boom died, Jack.”
Peter:
“He didn’t die.”
Peter:
Oh god, he’s got Rose-craziness.
Peter:
“He was murdered.”
Peter:
Oh, that makes more sense.
Peter:
And episode end!
Peter:
Most likeable: I’m tossing up between several here, but will give it to Jack for heroics.
Peter:
Least: Locke.
Peter:
Most intriguing: Denise, Jack’s…wife?
Peter:
Getting Least likeable doesn’t supersede his Most awesome character award. Just that in this ep he was comparitively not as likeable.
Peter:
[[Episode 21]]
Peter:
This is a long previously on. We’re at the end of the season, must be wrapping up a lot of character arcs.
Peter:
I think Kate’s due for another flashback episode, incidentally. First shot of the ep is of Sayid though.
Peter:
“He wouldn’t let Jack take his leg.”
Peter:
Come on, that phrasing’s not fair. Jack wasn’t trying to become Jake the Peg, or expand his leg collection.
Peter:
Sayid flashback episode. Looks like we’re going to find out why he was in Australia, going to America.
Peter:
I really don’t think there are as many Americans in Australia as this show seems to think there are.
Peter:
I know exactly…1.
Peter:
5+ Canadians though.
Peter:
Jack, listen to Kate. You just got rid of half your blood and haven’t slept. Stop wandering the jungle. Locke will turn up when he’s needed.
Peter:
How do all of these characters have such perfectly shaved heads?
Peter:
Locke, Random extra #8…do they use knives?
Peter:
The woman who drowned in episode 6 was called “Joanna”. Storing all this up in case all these deadites turn up again.
Peter:
Yeah, Jack, even if you weren’t blood and sleep-deprived, Locke would still kick your arse in hand-to-hand.
Peter:
Jack’s a strong early contender for Least likeable.
Peter:
Hey, just remembered, the compass that Locke gave Sayid was off.
Peter:
Prediction: the “black rock” in the middle of the island is a magnet.
Peter:
Both a standard magnet, and a magnet for planes and crazy people, etc etc.
Peter:
Sayid is trying to set off a smoke alarm with a cigarette. Aren’t they normally built to ignore cigarette smoke?
Peter:
“Happenstance” is a cool word.
Peter:
“Turnip-head” is a good name for the baby.
Peter:
Not as good as Ulrich, mind you.
Peter:
This episode is all character stuff, which is nice, but doesn’t give me much room to theorise. Get back to the mysteries, Lost!
Peter:
Girls on the island, in order of sexual appeal:
Peter:
1) Shannon
Peter:
2) Kate
Peter:
3) Extra in census episode
Peter:
4) Sun
Peter:
5) Claire
Peter:
6) Rose
Peter:
7) Eve
Peter:
Guys in order of sex appeal
Peter:
1) Sawyer
Peter:
2) Sayid
Peter:
3) Jack
Peter:
4) Locke
Peter:
5) Charlie
Peter:
6) Jin
Peter:
7) Michael
Peter:
7) Hurley
Peter:
8) Walt
Peter:
9) Turnip-head Ulrich
Peter:
Except without two sevens. Pretend there weren’t two sevens.
Peter:
No! Locke!! YOU knocked Sayid out!
Peter:
This show is more than a little bit inspired by Survivor. I keep expecting everyone to vote someone off.
Peter:
If Survivor inspired Lost, I wonder what the show inspired by Big Brother would be like.
Peter:
Or “Farmer Needs a Wife”.
Peter:
Ha! “There’s something about Miriam” as a dramatic series.
Peter:
Jin is very slowly learning English. It’s cute. Might give him Most likeable. We’ll see what everyone else does.
Peter:
Oooh, someone’s taken the key to the gun-case.
Peter:
My guess: Shannon.
Peter:
Oh come on, you can’t present a mystery and then solve it two shots later. Gives me nothing to predict.
Peter:
I’ve always wanted to see a suicide bombing pep-talk. Interesting stuff. “Drive with the windows down, the fresh air will keep you awake.”
Peter:
Alert, not awake. I suspect that very few people have accidentally drifted off before a suicide bombing.
Peter:
Holy crap, Shannon shot Locke. Holy holy holy crap. Locke!!
Peter:
Was thinking that the baby’s going to miss out on flu vaccinations, but I suppose in a closed society that’s not really a risk.
Peter:
Oh no!! Sayid was on his way back to his love when the plane crashed. Nice touch of tragedy without being a sob-story.
Peter:
Why is Locke so secretive about this hatch?
Peter:
Episode end!
Peter:
Most likeable: Turnip-head Ulrich.
Peter:
Least likeable: Shannon.
Peter:
Most intriguing: Sawyer.
Peter:
