Lost, Season 2: Episodes 16-18

:
In 2009, Peter watched through the first five seasons of Lost for the first time, live-tweeting all thoughts as he had them. Nicknames were created, awards were invented and dispensed, and predictions were made. If you’ve never seen Lost (or even if it’s been a while), these may not make much sense.

Lost
:
[[Episode 16]]
Peter:
Previously on deals with Henry (hoping for some closure!) and also Sun being knocked out by (I assume) Charlie or Sawyer.
Peter:
Still not sure if they knocked her out or just took advantage of the situation.
Peter:
It was possibly explained.
Peter:
I miss stuff, typing while I watch.
Peter:
For example the current scene is a Sun/Jin flashback, which means it’s mostly subtitled.
Peter:
I’ve caught most of it, but possibly missed a line or two.
Peter:
Prediction: Sun discovers that she’s pregnant this episode.
Peter:
2nd prediction: Sun was taking the pill all that time they were “trying”
Peter:
Jin is being a real arse this episode.
Peter:
I like Jin/Sun much better when they’re rediscovering their love, not being horrible.
Peter:
Admittedly, without the original spate of horrible I wouldn’t have enjoyed the rediscovering nearly as much, but don’t revert!
Peter:
Locke’s scar looks like it’s shifted slightly.
Peter:
Dodgy makeup job, or am I just wrong?
Peter:
Rose and Bernard are fighting.
Peter:
This episode seems to be all about couples bickering.
Peter:
I wonder if Locke’s scar hurts when Voldemort’s near.
Peter:
…is Sun having an affair with her old boyfriend?
Peter:
I love affairs. I think they make extraordinary television viewing.
Peter:
They’re underused.
Peter:
What happened to Mr Lee’s American?
Peter:
He was going to go over “in 6 months” and then marry her.
Peter:
Apparently Locke uses a razor to shave.
Peter:
That’s not nearly as cool as when he used to use a knife.
Peter:
Evidence that Henry’s one of the Others:
Peter:
-Sayid’s gut
Peter:
-he’s trying to manipulate Locke/Jack
Peter:
-he’s damned suspicious and creepy
Peter:
Sawyer’s nickname for Sun is “Sunshine”.
Peter:
That is my favourite nickname so far.
Peter:
My least favourite: “Jabba” for Hurley. That’s not nice.
Peter:
Sun’s after a pregnancy test.
Peter:
I originally typed “pregnancy twist” then.
Peter:
Great pregnancy twist would be if it came out half-black.
Peter:
Things I wish people would do:
Peter:
Sun, be pregnant to Michael.
Peter:
Hurley, not have secretly stashed heaps of food.
Peter:
Kate, do Sawyer.
Peter:
Locke, wrestle a polar bear to the ground.
Peter:
Echo, be on-camera more.
Peter:
Jin, stop being such a tosser. (both in flashback and present-day)
Peter:
Henry, admit to being an Other and give us heaps of information about them.
Peter:
Jack, work out leadership issues with Locke.
Peter:
Turns out I want a lot of people to do a lot of things.
Peter:
Claire, get back with Charlie.
Peter:
Sayid, just keep doin’ what you’re doin’.
Peter:
Sun/Jin’s flashbacks are really excellently integrated this episode.
Peter:
I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again…flashbacks only work when they take the current storyline, and add depth and colour.
Peter:
Sun, finding out (in flashback) that she was unable to have a baby adds HEAPS to the current storyline of her thinking she’s pregnant.
Peter:
Jin being such an arse about it/so clearly wanting a baby, that adds even more.
Peter:
So I’ll reiterate: flashbacks are great this episode.
Peter:
I wish I had a secret boyfriend who could teach me a second language. I would learn French.
Peter:
My favourite pairings, in order:
Peter:
1) Sawyer/Kate
Peter:
2) Jack/Kate
Peter:
3) Charlie/Claire
Peter:
4) Sayid/Anna
Peter:
5) Jack/Anna
Peter:
6) Jin/Sun
Peter:
7) Rose/Bernard
Peter:
Didn’t include Michael/Sun because we’ve not seen him for a while.
Peter:
Also omitted Locke/Echo because of complete lack of canonical evidence.
Peter:
Prediction: They will find the balloon, but it’s been there for a LOT longer than 4 months. Henry is totally an Other.
Peter:
I love the few moments when we hear English from Jin’s point of view and it’s just gibberish. Sounds like dialogue that’s been reversed.
Peter:
Holy crap! Flashback just revealed – Sun’s not infertile, Jin is.
Peter:
Sun really did sleep around, or Island magically refertilised him?
Peter:
Most likely to be Sun’s father’s baby:
Peter:
1) Jin
Peter:
2) Michael
Peter:
3) Mr Lee
Peter:
4) Echo/Locke (just from conversing with Sun. They’re that fertile.)
Peter:
Guess we’ll find out when it comes out, from the colour of its skin.
Peter:
I love it when Jin/Sun are getting along.
Peter:
Such a great couple.
Peter:
Prediction: We go through this whole “Others trying to steal the baby” thing again in about a season’s time.
Peter:
Either time is going to start passing a lot more quickly, or this is going to be one of the longest TV pregnancies in history.
Peter:
It’ll be rivaled only by Joe’s wife on Family Guy.
Peter:
Man I dislike Henry.
Peter:
Was going to give Least Likeable to Jin, but he redeemed himself and Henry makes my skin creep.
Peter:
Least likeable: Henry.
Peter:
Most likeable: Sun, she’s been great all episode.
Peter:
Most intriguing: Sun. Who’s the daddy??
Peter:
Great episode end. I love passive-aggressive characters who hold all the cards.
Peter:
Henry’s a great dislikeable character.
Peter:
Each episode of Lost ends with “the filmmakers thank the people of Hawaii and the Oloha spirit.”
Peter:
It seems really patronising.
Peter:
[[Episode 17]]
Peter:
Let’s hit it!
Peter:
This disc’s cover has Jin and Sun, the menu has the third Scientist base, the one they took Claire to. (will call this “Base Theta.”)
Peter:
Just noticed that the cover has the numbers written on them.
Peter:
I shouldn’t find that as eerie as I do.
Peter:
Do all Lost DVD owners now have Number Fever?
Peter:
Previously on Lost is about Locke’s father.
Peter:
I quite like the Locke father back-story.
Peter:
Also, unsurprisingly, covers Henry. Should be a good ep!
Peter:
Locke has bought a ring, presumably to propose to…Helen?
Peter:
“Previously on” didn’t have anything about his wheelchair, so this probs probably isn’t going to be about Locke’s “accident”, or whatever caused his paralysation.
Peter:
Locke’s father is dead.
Peter:
Oooh. They found the smiley-face balloon + his wife’s grave.
Peter:
I stand by my earlier prediction: his back-story is true, he’s still an Other.
Peter:
Is Jack Locke’s father-figure? That doesn’t at all seem like a healthy relationship.
Peter:
Locke is either
Peter:
a) Hallucinating/whatever it’s called when the island creates things for you to hear/see
Peter:
b) being contacted by Anna on the radio in the balloon. (do balloons have radios?) or
Peter:
c) the computer is contacting him, like it did Michael. My bet’s on c).
Peter:
Evidence to suggest that Henry ISN’T an Other:
Peter:
1) His story checks out. Dead Wife, balloon where he said it’d be.
Peter:
2) He got caught.
Peter:
It seems unlikely that an Other would get caught by Danielle’s trap. Doesn’t make much sense.
Peter:
I still don’t trust him though.
Peter:
Meanwhile, in the episode, Chekhov’s Boom Doors all went down. Looks like it was
Peter:
d) “Something else that I don’t understand.”
Peter:
Locke’s Dad is alive. Had a fake funeral.
Peter:
He’s a professional con-man! I love con men. Hopefully he’s connected to Sawyer somehow.
Peter:
Don’t fall for this Locke, it’s got to be another con.
Peter:
Meanwhile Henry is being enlisted to help him with the boom doors.
Peter:
If the flashbacks tie into the story this ep, then it’s about recognising cons/being conned.
Peter:
My guess is that Henry & Dad are both conning him.
Peter:
Holy crap, I was so excited for a few seconds there.
Peter:
Locke & Henry got a boom gate open and I thought “yay, success!”
Peter:
Then it crushed Locke’s legs. Disappointing.
Peter:
Similarly, Locke got the $700k, yay exciting, but then the thugs were at his house.
Peter:
I have never before heard “Phuket” pronounced, and I used to work in a map shop. “Pook-ett”.
Peter:
Henry is learning about the numbers.
Peter:
I was hoping that they would mean something to him, but no sign of recognition.
Peter:
Everyone in the hatch is disabled, and the alarm is going off. But I still don’t think that the numbers won’t be typed in in time.
Peter:
This is just another “building how important it is to enter the numbers” episode. They’re saving it for the finale or beyond.
Peter:
Mysteries being dealt with at the moment:
Peter:
-Henry: good or evil?
Peter:
-why’d the boom gates come down?
Peter:
I’m still in the “Henry is evil” camp.
Peter:
Re: boom gates – perhaps something that happened in one of the other bases set them off.
Peter:
Perhaps the Others set something off as the best chance to let Henry escape/rescue him. That’s all I’ve got so far.
Peter:
The lights went off and ultraviolet lights came on, showing an unusual diagram with a question-mark at the centre.
Peter:
ANOTHER MYSTERY.
Peter:
Evidence is pretty strongly stacking up for Henry not being an Other.
Peter:
I’m sort of disappointed. Innocent man was tortured.
Peter:
There’s a mysterious light flashing in the jungle. They’ve found a parachute and a delivery of food.
Peter:
This organisation is still running??
Peter:
So the boom gates seem to go down before a food delivery.
Peter:
So that the inHatchibants don’t have communication with the deliverers?
Peter:
Oh excellent twist. They dug up the grave, and there was no wife inside – there was a man.
Peter:
“A man named Henry Gale.”
Peter:
Wow, great ep. Integration of flashbacks was a little weak, but I’ll forgive it.
Peter:
We can’t all be Hurley/Jin/Sun.
Peter:
So “Henry” may not be one of The Others, but there’s still something extraordinarly suspicious about him.
Peter:
Prediction: we get a Henry flashback episode before the end of season 3.
Peter:
Most likeable: Locke…wait, no. Can’t do that. I’ll give it to Jack, for the poker game.
Peter:
Least likeable: Helen, Locke’s almost-fiancee.
Peter:
Most intriguing: Henry. Really want to know his story.
Peter:
[[Episode 18]]
Peter:
Just a few seconds in and this episode is already rocking.
Peter:
Looks like a Libby/Hurley episode, and I’ve never disliked a Hurley episode.
Peter:
Hurley’s hallucinating a bald man (because Lost doesn’t have enough of those).
Peter:
A few minutes back, they threw away Hurley’s secret stash.
Peter:
He’s found a slipper. Prediction: Cinderella has come to the island.
Peter:
More serious predictions:
Peter:
-the man relates to Hurley’s time in a mental hospital.
Peter:
-the slipper is what they used to wear there.
Peter:
Flashbacks
Peter:
a) are Hurley’s
Peter:
b) Are about his time in the mental hospital
Peter:
c) Look like they’re going to be really well-integrated.
Peter:
All three of those things are extraordinarily good things.
Peter:
Bald man seems to be “Dave”, a bad influence on Hurley.
Peter:
Just got a bizarre message about these liveblogs.
Peter:
“That’s why it’s called the Smoke Monster”.
Peter:
I have no idea what that means. Please don’t tell me!
Peter:
Some day I’ll look back and this will all make complete sense.
Peter:
Locke’s off his leg for a couple of weeks. This will really interestingly affect the Locke/Jack conflict.
Peter:
Not-Henry’s lies don’t check out. I really really hope he’s a con-man.
Peter:
OH! He’s definitely an Other. That was unexpected.
Peter:
He’s a terrified Other. They’re all terrified of “Him”, who is definitely not Landis.
Peter:
Wild theory: “Him” is Jack’s Dad.
Peter:
And we’re checking in with Echo and his tree chopping-down.
Peter:
He’s building something.
Peter:
Hopefully not a raft. We’ve done that plot.
Peter:
Hurley’s hallucinating Dave again. HalluciDave threw a rock at Hurley, so he definitely has physical presence.
Peter:
Hurley: “Did either of you see a guy run through here in a bathrobe with a coconut?”
Peter:
Charlie: “I saw a polar bear rollerblading.”
Peter:
Theory: Dave doesn’t exist.
Peter:
To expand: Theory: Hurley was in the mental hospital because he imagines Dave.
Peter:
So far we’ve seen Dave only a few times.
Peter:
1) When playing basketball & no one would pass to him.
Peter:
2) The doctor took a photo.
Peter:
At the end of the episode, we’ll see the photo and it’ll just be Hurley with his arm around no-one.
Peter:
This show’s really making me crave peanut-butter.
Peter:
Hurley desperately licking spilled peanut-butter off a leaf is one of the least attractive images that Lost has presented so far.
Peter:
Yup, Dave doesn’t exist.
Peter:
Doctor: “You eat to punish yourself.”
Peter:
How depressing. I eat to reward myself for rocking so hard!
Peter:
I’ve always found completely hallucinated people fascinating. I had a friend who had schizophrenia years back, she imagined a girl living in her head.
Peter:
To her, “Sarah” (her hallucination) wasn’t an imagined person, she was as real as everything else in the world. Convinced her of things.
Peter:
Convinced her that her parents were trying to kill her, that she (“Sarah”) was her only friend. Fascinating stuff.
Peter:
Meanwhile, back on Lost…
Peter:
They’re doing the whole “This whole world is actually part of a character’s dream.” episode. I love these episodes.
Peter:
House did one as well, but he woke up at the end of it.
Peter:
So did Buffy.
Peter:
Typically they decide to stick with the hallucination, so the show can continue.
Peter:
I’m going to call Not-Henry “Frank”.
Peter:
Frank is trying to convince John that he didn’t enter the numbers.
Peter:
I suspect he did.
Peter:
Perhaps that was his “mission” from the start. To stop them from continuing to press the button.
Peter:
That doesn’t make much sense though.
Peter:
Theory: the timer only does its horrible stuff after the button isn’t pressed 5+ times.
Peter:
Frank’s ploy was to stop them from pressing it.
Peter:
Meanwhile, the Hurley/Libby storyline is rocking. They just kissed.
Peter:
…5th kiss on the island? Sawyer/Kate, Kate/Jack, Jin/Sun, Rose/Bernard
Peter:
And now Libby/Hurley.
Peter:
Hurley’s getting Most Likeable character.
Peter:
oh wow, GREAT reveal! Libby’s in the mental home too! Episode end.
Peter:
Was going to give Most Intriguing to Frank, but Libby can have it after that great reveal.
Peter:
Frank can have Least Likeable.
Peter:
