Lost, Season 2: Episodes 19-21

:
In 2009, Peter watched through the first five seasons of Lost for the first time, live-tweeting all thoughts as he had them. Nicknames were created, awards were invented and dispensed, and predictions were made. If you’ve never seen Lost (or even if it’s been a while), these may not make much sense.

Lost
:
[[Episode 19]]
Peter:
Previously on deals with the Others, Frank pressing the button, and (most intriguingly) the question-mark diagram.
Peter:
We open with Rose and Bernard discussing the mysterious drop of food.
Peter:
I sincerely hope this won’t be a Rose/Bernard flashback episode…
Peter:
No one seems particularly concerned with the whereabouts of Michael.
Peter:
Oh wow, it is a Rose/Bernard flashback episode. I was kidding.
Peter:
This had better be good.
Peter:
Whole heap of supporting characters just got names.
Peter:
Jenkins, Craig, the frozen yoghurt guy…
Peter:
Prediction that I don’t really expect to come true:
Peter:
-Bernard’s plans give another extra a line, then cause said extra to be killed.
Peter:
Oh cool, Echo’s building a church.
Peter:
Charlie’s been really cute lately.
Peter:
I like him (and Locke) best as supporting characters.
Peter:
When they’re supporting characters, they have a niche that they fit.
Peter:
Locke is the problem-solver, Charlie does the cute one-liners.
Peter:
Conversely, I like Sawyer least when he’s a tiny character, because he just withholds stuff and is unpleasant.
Peter:
Who the hell goes to Australia for a faith healer?
Peter:
I was watching a film with mates last night, and my fingers itched the whole time. I just constantly wanted to type out predictions.
Peter:
Being caught in a net = best excuse for close touching/sexual tension building that Lost has had so far.
Peter:
Oooh. Characters on the show are acknowleding the island’s magical healing powers.
Peter:
Rose who was dying, Locke who was wheelchair-bound.
Peter:
It’s being implied that the Island is a place with leylines that have healing energy, or some kind of mystical force.
Peter:
Is that why the scientists chose this place to do their experiments?
Peter:
Also why so many planes/other vessels crash here?
Peter:
Rose (and by extension Bernard) are now on the list of people firmly advantaged by the crash.
Peter:
Kate has finally told Jack about the third hatch.
Peter:
Jack: “When were you going to tell me?”
Peter:
Kate: “When you let me back in the club.”
Peter:
Several people have now mentioned the club. Hurley referred to it as “the loop”. Wonder if this’ll lead to a showdown.
Peter:
Damn, this show is good at exceeding my expectations.
Peter:
Rose/Bernard flashbacks were great. Helped a lot that Locke had a cameo.
Peter:
Prediction:
Peter:
-we shall eventually discover that this island has advantaged everyone who’s landed on it.
Peter:
People still firmly on the “disadvantaged” list:
Peter:
-Sayid (was going to meet his sweetheart in America)
Peter:
-no others I can recall
Peter:
Episode end.
Peter:
Jack: ‘Yo Kate, I’m glad we snogged’, then Michael reappeared.
Peter:
Not a great cliffhanger.
Peter:
Most likeable: Charlie.
Peter:
Least likeable: Bernard.
Peter:
Most intriguing: Michael, I suppose, but that’s a gift.
Peter:
[[Episode 20]]
Peter:
Previously on includes Anna shooting that guy she shot, Michael leaving, Frank’s “They’ll never give you Walt”, Michael reappearing.
Peter:
Another Anna flashback episode.
Peter:
Haha, it’s the repercussion of her executing her shooter. Interesting stuff.
Peter:
I love watching people get away with murder.
Peter:
So all my predictions about The Others being a tribal group are right out the window. They’re much more technologically advanced.
Peter:
Oooh, Jack’s Dad. He shows up a LOT.
Peter:
So far: Sawyer’s flashbacks, Jack’s (obviously), and now Anna’s. He has a part to play.
Peter:
Jack’s Dad: “What I’m going to do down there could be dangerous, I’ll need a body guard.”
Peter:
What is he doing?
Peter:
Theories:
Peter:
-something to do with the numbers
Peter:
-discovering a cure for death
Peter:
-rounding everyone up and putting them on the flight.
Peter:
Have I already theorised that Jack’s Dad is the “He” that everyone’s so afraid of? If not, I’m theorising it now.
Peter:
Frank: “You’re one of the good ones, John.”
Peter:
The Others have mentioned this a few times now, sorting people like that.
Peter:
Frank’s mission was to get Locke.
Peter:
He was accidentally captured, and is now going to be killed for failing his mission.
Peter:
Or so he claims…
Peter:
I still think his mission was to be captured and sabotage the button-pressing somehow. The dissent he’s caused was an added bonus.
Peter:
Jack’s Dad is talking to someone in Australia. It sounds like Clare, but that might just be because she’s Australian.
Peter:
Yup, definitely not Clare.
Peter:
This is the first of Sayid we’ve seen in a while.
Peter:
Hurley is getting girl advice from Sayid.
Peter:
This is the absolute best person to get advice from on the whole island.
Peter:
How to be sexy/how to seduce girls? Definitely Sawyer.
Peter:
How to be romantic? Sayid. No competition.
Peter:
Anna/Sawyer kiss! Holy crap there is a lot of kissing going on this season. Also: it looks like they are having sex.
Peter:
Before they started kissing, I was trying to work out a better way of phrasing “In real life, the island would have more fucking.”
Peter:
I suppose it makes sense, Jack’s story being the central story of the show. Justifies him being the main character.
Peter:
He’s just one of the least interesting characters is all.
Peter:
Anna/Jack’s Dad just hit Sawyer with the door of their car.
Peter:
I’ve mentioned that I love the crossovers, right?
Peter:
Sawyer and Anna just had sex.
Peter:
Island sexings so far:
Peter:
Shannon/Sayid,
Peter:
Sawyer/Anna,
Peter:
Implied: Sun/Jin,
Peter:
Rose/Bernard.
Peter:
There are a lot of plots in this show. I really hope they wrap up together.
Peter:
It would suck if the Jack’s Dad plot was unrelated to the main one.
Peter:
Michael’s claiming The Others live in tents with bare feet. That is clearly for show.
Peter:
They’ve set up a tiny charade, so it looks like the castaways can attack them. When they do, they’ll be hopelessly outgunned.
Peter:
Michael: “They have 2 guns! 2!”
Peter:
Plus the 3 they took from you, Jack. Also grenades, if I recall correctly…
Peter:
They’re planning on raising an army and attacking the Others.
Peter:
This is a phenomenally bad idea.
Peter:
Hurley’s being so cute this episode.
Peter:
“Welcome to the most prettiest secret beach on the island!”
Peter:
“Hurley, this is our beach.”
Peter:
I wish people would stop killing each Other that they capture.
Peter:
Makes it hard to get information from them.
Peter:
This show looooves the gun-barrel focus pull.
Peter:
This is like the fifth we’ve seen so far.
Peter:
Desmond (the inHatchibant), when he first saw Locke, asked “Are you Him?”.
Peter:
Same “Him” as the Others’ Him? Theory: Des was an Other.
Peter:
Maybe not knowingly, but his strings were definitely being pulled by the same power controlling the Others.
Peter:
That’s why they were so annoyed that Group A had opened the hatch.
Peter:
They could rely on Desmond to press the button, not these new guys.
Peter:
These people need to remember that Frank can hear every conversation they have right outside his Hatch.
Peter:
Holy crap, Michael just shot Anna! AND LIBBY. New cast-members are dropping like flies!
Peter:
Michael has clearly become one of them.
Peter:
I’m really curious as to how they do it.
Peter:
AND HE SHOT HIMSELF. That is a GREAT end-of-episode cliffhanger. It’s been a while since we had any deaths.
Peter:
Most likeable: I’ll go with Sawyer, for being cute and having sex.
Peter:
Least likeable: Michael. Stupid shooty-man.
Peter:
Most intriguing: also Michael.
Peter:
[[Episode 21]]
Peter:
This ep is called “?”
Peter:
From accidentally reading the first few words of the episode summary, I discovered Echo’s name is spelled “Eko”.
Peter:
He just keeps getting cooler.
Peter:
Hopefully those blankets Libby was carrying were bullet-proof.
Peter:
We start on Eko hallucinating. This is going to be a good episode.
Peter:
All the time I’m watching this, I’m trying to work out how it was written.
Peter:
Did they sit down and work out the entire conspiracy THEN work out how to best and most intriguingly to reveal it THEN work out characters?
Peter:
Oh wow, well played Michael. No one suspects him of anything.
Peter:
He can continue to be in the group, at least until Anna wakes up.
Peter:
…she’s dead. Looks like there won’t be a lot of waking up to be done by Anna.
Peter:
Oh! Libby woke up. Excellent.
Peter:
I can see why they had that second Anna flashback episode so quickly after the first. Had to fit it in before she died.
Peter:
I reckon this show has the highest “people shot: population” ratio of any show on television.
Peter:
40-odd people living on the island, at least 5 or 6 shot so far. Michael, Shannon, the cop, Anna, Sawyer, Libby, must be others.
Peter:
Eko is dealing with a woman who claims her daughter came back to life after drowning. Perhaps this relates to Jack’s Dad.
Peter:
Eko and Locke are having their own little adventure.
Peter:
V. cool. If they get their spinoff though, the spelling will have to revert to Echo.
Peter:
Dharma, Dharma, got to remember that. The Dharma Institute.
Peter:
The Hatch = Base Alpha (or Lab Alpha).
Peter:
The wooden-doored hatch where Group B was hiding out = Lab Beta.
Peter:
The medical lab, Gamma.
Peter:
But was Michael lying when he said that The Others had their own hatch, or is there a Lab Delta?
Peter:
The video said 3 labs, but there may be more
Peter:
Lab Beta seemed pretty small. Not a proper lab. Just a…base of operations, for studying?
Peter:
Possibly for studying the polar bears.
Peter:
Oh no! Hurley just asked after Libby. Poor little guy. 🙁
Peter:
What I like about Eko and Locke is that they’re both incredibly practical, but incredibly spiritual.
Peter:
I was wondering why Eko was limping. Because it was Locke’s dream. Very clever.
Peter:
Oooh! The psychic from Clare’s past is showing up in Eko’s. These crossovers rock.
Peter:
Okay, Eko’s flashback doesn’t seem to particularly be relating to the current episode, but having a HUGE effect on previous flashbacks.
Peter:
This episode is making me want to go rock-climbing.
Peter:
We haven’t heard much about Sun’s baby lately. Wonder if we have time for a Sun/Jin episode before the season finishes.
Peter:
They just found another set of doors. Lab Epsilon?
Peter:
When the bulk of the episode is about my two favourite characters, it makes it very hard to choose a most likeable.
Peter:
Predictions:
Peter:
-Libby gets addicted to heroin
Peter:
-Michael feels guilty and confesses all or kills himself.
Peter:
-down the hatch they find controls for either a security system or a communications system.
Peter:
Down the hatch they’ve…wow, they’ve found a security system.
Peter:
Cameras all over the island. Pretty cool.
Peter:
Go Peter’s guessing powers!
Peter:
They’re printing a log. That’ll show the conversation Michael had, make them suspicious.
Peter:
Apparently this is Station 5: The Pearl. Station 5 of 6.
Peter:
One guy has been mentioned on two different videos now.
Peter:
My money’s on him being the Others’ Him.
Peter:
“They believe their tasks are of the utmost importance.”
Peter:
So the timer seems to actually do nothing.
Peter:
Shit is HAPPENING this season.
Peter:
I have no idea how this show can go for another 4 seasons.
Peter:
Eko is exceptionally attractive. I’m more than a little bit in love with the actor, as well as the character.
Peter:
Okay, so the flashbacks have nothing to do with this episode, but influence the series as a whole. I’m okay with that.
Peter:
My first, instinctive reaction was that the message sent to Michael came from Lab Epsilon (“The Pearl”) but that doesn’t make sense.
Peter:
I’m so glad I didn’t watch Lost when it originally came out, for several reasons.
Peter:
1) I hate waiting week-to-week for stuff to be revealed. I’ve watched 2 seasons in less than 4 days. Can’t imagine waiting two YEARS to find this stuff out.
Peter:
2) I would have been online, reading conspiracy theories like crazy. As it is, I get to write my own, which is much more fun.
Peter:
When I read other people’s theories, I tend to pick them up and tweak them to create my own.
Peter:
This way, I get to write my own from scratch.
Peter:
3) There would have been the Australian-American delay, and so I would have had to put a lot of effort in to avoid spoilers.
Peter:
As it is, I’ve accidentally read countless spoilers, not understood any of them, and consequently forgotten almost all of them.
Peter:
Meanwhile, episode just ended with Michael looking at the computer, not typing anything in.
Peter:
Most likeable: With Eko and Locke out of the running, will have to go with the psychic, just for being a crossover character.
Peter:
Least likeable: Michael, for all that killing he’s been doing.
Peter:
Most intriguing: Eko.
Peter:
God damn Eko rocks.
Peter:
