[[Episode 19]]
Previously on Lost is about Locke and his Dad.
I had forgotten about this plotline.
Didn’t even list it in “current mysteries.”
If I ever have a kid I hope that I don’t scam them of their kidney then put them in a wheelchair.
I know I’ve made this list before, but I really enjoy it.
Things Locke has blown up:
-the Hatch
-Eyepatch Man’s Lair
-a submarine.
Locke appears to have been left alone with some documents, a fire, and his father.
WHOA! Awesome line.
Locke’s Dad: “Don’t you know, John? Don’t you know where we are?”
The answer to that could clear up SO MUCH.
I can’t believe how cute and loveable Sawyer’s being.
“Fine, we’ll go to your tent.”
And now he’s walking her home!
Leader!Sawyer is seriously my favourite of all the sides of Sawyer that we’ve seen.
Oh I love this episode so much already.
Okay I do not believe that Locke has kidnapped Ben.
Locke is fairly clearly working for the Others.
Australian Flight Attendant is my favourite of the kidnappees. She is very cute. Also: Australian!
I don’t feel comfortable with how accepting Locke is of the Others kidnapping women.
“The Magic Box is a metaphor.”
Hee hee hee. Such a silly line, delivered so straight.
I’m not sure if I trust Jack, and I’m a viewer who saw everything that he went through.
I definitely don’t trust Locke.
Where’s Sayid? We haven’t seen Sayid in a while now.
Can’t he just be a side-character?
Doesn’t need to be main, just needs to appear.
If I recall correctly, my original nickname for Sawyer was “angry-man”.
That nickname has remained relevant over 3 seasons.
Locke’s original nickname of “Scar-eye Orange-mouth” isn’t quite as relevant.
He’s still got the scarred eye, but so rarely eats oranges.
Sayid!! Love a bit of Sayid.
I particularly likes that he doesn’t trust Jack either.
It’s possible, of course, that Italian Pilot is lying, but it’s much more interesting if she was telling the truth.
Anyone reading this: if I’m ever castaway on an island with you, cryptic answers are illegal.
NO CRYPTIC ANSWERS.
Punishable by death.
Whoa. Is Locke’s Dad going to be the man that Sawyer has been hunting all this time?
That would tie together SO nicely.
Should just predict, instead of asking these questions.
Prediction: Locke’s Dad is the man that blah blah blah.
I am anti-killing.
Any group that wants you to kill someone to become part of their group is not a group I want to become a part of.
And yes, that includes the SIS. I will probably never become a double-0 agent.
Whoa!
While I was looking up James Bond’s organisation (was trying to remember if it was SIS or MI5) Locke took Sawyer to the Black Rock.
I wasn’t sure that we’d ever see the Black Rock again.
Thought it might be one of those mysteries introduced and then forgotten.
Like the foot of the statue with four toes.
Haven’t heard ANYTHING about that since it was first mentioned.
Ditto Adam and Eve, or the Man from Tallahassee.
Locke is craaaaazy.
I like this Richard Other guy.
He’s delivering all kinds of exposition.
The Island seems to be some kind of…spiritual retreat?
Should have made the connection, really.
Sawyer searching for a conman, Locke’s Dad a conman.
Brilliantly set up.
Oh! Locke’s Dad is the Man from Tallahassee.
Also, he thinks the Island is hell.
That is a disappointing conclusion to make.
I thought he had better answers than “this is hell”.
Mmm, angry Sawyer.
Locke is really desperate to join the Others.
Still no explanation of the whispering noises though.
Never will be.
I love that Sawyer is still carrying around the letter.
I’m predicting Sawyer (James) as Most Likeable.
I mean I guess it doesn’t really count as a prediction when it’s something I decide but shh.
DAMN the Others (particularly Benry) excel at making people want to join them.
“Jack, we’ll get you off the island.”
“Locke, we’ll teach you the secrets of the Island.”
“Hitler, we’ve got some gypsies for you to kill.”
Locke’s Dad is really quite unlikeable for a con-man.
Tut tut tut.
I mean, yeah, he thinks he’s in hell, but you’d expect him to have some sort of natural charm/likeableness.
Also: now that we know that Juliet is still working for the Others, we can’t entirely trust anything she has to say.
Such a pity.
She revealed so much interesting Other exposition, and now we don’t know if any of it’s believable.
Sawyer’s killings since coming to the Island:
-a polar bear
-Locke’s Dad
-VHE and Dirk (by burying them)
Oh, and the Martial that had been tracking Kate. Martial? Marshall?
The cop-guy. Sawyer killed him too.
Jack is being incredibly dislikeable this episode, but not nearly as much as Benry. Not sure who to give Intriguing to.
Locke, I s’pose.
Locke’s Dad/Sawyer is perhaps my favourite cross-over thus far.
(except possibly Jack/Clare)
Locke giving proof of Juliet’s spyhood = excellent television. REALLY keen to see what happens next.
Episode end!
Most Likeable: Sawyer (woo murder yay)
Least Likeable: Benry.
Most Intriguing: Locke.
[[Episode 20]]
Am just about to start “The Man Behind the Mirror”, my friend Ryan’s favourite episode.
Rather looking forward to it.
Curtain, not mirror. The Man Behind the Curtain.
It’s a Wizard of Oz quote:
“Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!”
Will we see the intriguing “Jacob” this episode, or is that slightly too optimistic?
Is Jacob Jack’s Dad?
Predictions:
-Jacob is Benry OR
-Jacob is Jack’s Dad
-This will be a Benry flashback episode
-Juliet gets pwned.
Okay, let’s go! The tension is killing me.
Previously on Lost about the Island’s powers, Juliet’s tape-recorder (duh), & the Others.
Two unknowns are having a child on the Island.
Hang on, if Benry’s lived here his whole life…was he born there?
Is this his birth?
Apparently Aussie legislation was recently passed to make childbirth in hospitals mandatory.
No more home-births.
Ha! They are not on the Island. They are not on the Island at all.
Really nice subversion. Well played,
Yup! Looks like I just witnessed the birth of Benry.
Benry flashback episode? I sincerely hope so.
I’m retracting Locke’s Most Intriguing award from last episode and giving it to Other Richard. Had forgotten about him.
Sorry Locke.
Named Others:
-Benry
-Richard
-Tom
-Juliet
-that angry guy who hated Sawyer
-Alex
-Alex’s boyfriend
Benry: “I know I promised to tell you everything about the Island, John…”
yessss
“…BUT”
oh screw you Benry!
Screw you!
“Take me to Jacob”
“I can’t.”
Grrr. I suspect that Jacob doesn’t exist.
Oh, so does Locke.
Oh Locke. I remember why I love you so.
Right, so that Wizard of Oz reference wasn’t being played as subtly as I thought it would be.
It was fairly clearly spelled out.
Mmmm Benry flashback episode.
I love you so much, this episode.
Feels like this season has had more exposition than the last 2 seasons put together.
Is that just because I’ve watched it over months, instead of all in one weekend?
OH! Benry’s Dad is Roger the Disembodied Head!
That is really a rather nice tie-in.
This episode is winning quite hard so far.
I maintain that I want to see more of Sayid.
Preferably doing something other than torture people.
Eyepatch Man is called “McIsle”.
I will continue to call him Eyepatch Man.
Partially because I don’t know how to properly spell “McIsle”, mostly for fun.
Locke just went postal on Eyepatch Man.
And now he’s being all “I call the shots, Benry.”
Locke rules.
Totally deserves his award.
Exposition! The Island once had a volcano. “A long time ago.”
Young Benry is so cute.
He may even win Most Likeable.
So, it appears that the Dharma Institute used to have a school.
And the Others were Dharmians, separate to “the natives”.
Scary woman at Benry’s window looked a lot like Juliet. Coincidence?
Prediction: Jacob is leader of The Natives.
Kate is being a bit of a bitch.
Can’t tell quite whose side I’m on here.
Benry: “I assure you Jacob is very very real.”
Prediction: he’s not very very real. Maybe just a little real.
He’s got to be Jack’s father. There’s been way too much build-up for him to simply be an unknown, a random.
Benry’s childhood sweetheart is adorable.
Maybe SHE’ll get Most Likeable.
Predictions:
-she dies
-she’s Desmond’s sweetheart.
Things Lost makes me appreciate:
-my Dad’s not an alcoholic
-I’m not stranded on an Island in the middle of nowhere
-I’m not called “Benry”
The fact that Jack’s Dad didn’t appear in the “Previously on” suggests that he won’t be Jacob.
(or that if he is, we won’t meet him this episode)
Island council!
There needs to be more big tribal meetings like this.
Gives extras something to do.
Shit is going down.
Juliet’s all like “I told Jack” and Jack’s all like “she did!” and everyone’s all like “woahhhh. Well what now?”
Was going to comment on the fact that there aren’t any rabbits on the Island nowadays, but just remembered: there are.
Test-rabbits.
Holy what the. Benry is seeing Patrick! Patrick is Jacob??
Ageless and creepy as all fuck?
Patrick has not aged in 30 years.
My guess is obviously that he’s Jacob, but it’s also possible it’s Patrick’s father.
Patrick as Jacob is an excellent twist. I give it 5/5.
Hasn’t been confirmed yet, but it’s definitely coming.
Young Benry has Harry Potter glasses.
Meanwhile, older Benry has taken Locke to a shack in the middle of nowhere. What’s the haps?
Predictions:
-the shack is empty, Benry is using it as a place to subdue Locke.
-Jacob is Patrick, who clones himself at will.
Benry: “Once I open this door, there’s no turning back.”
Suspension is effectively built, Benry! Open the freaking door!
Shack’s looking pretty empty. Benry is craaaaazy.
Benry, you’re not at all believable. You’re standing too closely to that chair for us to believe that you think there’s someone there.
How anti-climactic.
Unless that chair starts rocking or something, this twist sucks.
Chair started rocking!
Windows are exploding!
Go team awesome twist!
Having said that, Benry grabbed the chair to stop it, not the arms of someone who would have been sitting on the chair.
Is Emma’s Chekhovian gun going to come into play?
Do some hardcore shootin’, Locke!
Locke, I’m going to be honest, you are rarely in a position to be skeptical. You blew up the hatch, remember?
Okay, so Jacob seems to be either
1) Invisible and sort of weird and ghostly, or
2) A strange figment of Benry’s imagination.
My money’s on 2). Stupid Lost and its refusal to answer questions.
Questions are only ever answered 5+ episodes after they’re introduced.
Ah, excellent. The exact moment that Benry snapped and started killing people.
This sort of explains his “Locke, kill your Dad!” rant.
Holy heckaroo! Not only did he kill his Dad, he seems to have taken out most of the Dharma Initiative.
You a crazy mofo, Benry.
Please, please don’t tell me that was just meant to be a young Patrick. He looks EXACTLY the same.
This episode has answered a lot of Dharma Initiative questions in an incredibly boring way.
Hoorah? It gets an apathetic “yay”.
No! Don’t shoot Locke!
He excels in so many ways. Really hopeful prediction:
-Locke lives! Somehow!
NO! Oh Episode ending why do you have to taunt me so!
Gah!
I can’t even stay up and watch more! Damn you, work tomorrow!
Most Likeable: Benry’s childhood sweetheart.
Least Likeable: BENRY. Stupid Benry. Hate him so much.
Most Intriguing: Patrick (again.)
The Dharma explanation kind of sucked.
I assume Benry’s mass murder was “The Incident.”
Predictions:
-Locke doesn’t die.
-The Castaways turn against Jack & Juliet.
-I’m too busy to watch more for another week or two.
Locke is way too cool to die, and I’m way too busy to dedicate as much time to as I’d like to. Maybe if I get ill again…
I’m sold on Jacob being more than Benry’s imagination now. (which, in retrospect, is way too weak to pass muster.)
I’m still a big fan of Jacob being Jack’s Dad, but don’t really understand how it would work.
Maybe he’s just the spirit of the Island?
I’m still, I will admit, a tiny big confused about why I thought Juliet & Benry were married for so long.
It was only 5 episodes ago that I realised that they weren’t.
Also: there’s too much going on to make predictions at the moment, but here’s the stuff that’s still definitely classed as “mystery”
Big mysteries of Lost:
-The Smoke-monster: what is it? What’re its motivations? Why could Eko stare it down? Why is it so timid?
-the (original) natives: Where’d they come from? Why are they so antagonistic? What’re their motivations?
-the numbers: Why were they being broadcast from the Island? Why do they cause bad luck? Why were they on the Hatch?
-the plane: Why are there so many passenger backstory crossovers? Were they brought here? How’d they survive?
-Jacob: Who is he? Why are people being brainwashed into worshipping him? Why could Locke hear but not see him?
-the Island: Why does it have healing/sperm-increasing powers? Why can’t women give birth here?Is it sentient/alive?
-the Others: Why are they here? What’s up with their habit of kidnapping people? (“the lists”) Why come here?
Small mysteries of Lost:
-the four-toed statue foot
-Jack’s Dad’s body
-Adam & Eve
-the Others’ whispering sound
-Desmond psychic abilities
Perhaps Jack’s Dad paid psychic to get her on that plane.
It’s possible that I’m reading far too much into Jack’s Dad being in so many backstories. I hope not!
[[Episode 21]]
I should be working, but I’ve got a hankering for some Lost!
Locke was just shot, last time I watched..
Here are the thoughts I’ve been a’thinking’ lately:
-Season 1 had the Hatch, built up throughout the season, opened at the end.
S2 had the numbers that had to be pushed.
What about s3?
I think that Jacob is the closest we’ve come to a season-wide mystery. Prediction: Jacob will be revealed in the final episode.
Further thought: s2 started from the inHatchibant’s POV, s3 started from the Weirdtopian’s POV. Will s4 start from Jacob’s POV?
Housemate just got home with pizza and new glasses. He’s exhausted. His first words:
Please tell me you’re watching Lost. Yes? Excellent!
And now to start the episode!
Previously on Lost is about Desmond’s Charlie!Death visions and Juliet’s subterfuge.
And the boat.
I suppose the boat off-shore could qualify for the end-of-season episode, but it wasn’t really hinted at early enough in the episode.
Jack and Juliet are showing the Castaways something mysterious.
So far it just seems to be Danielle. We’ve met her before.
An electrical box…yes, we’ve seen those before.
Oh! An explosion! That is definitely worth the secrecy.
I heart explosions.
Jack sure has a healthy bloodlust.
First his army in the second season, now he wants to explode the Weirdtopians.
Don’t get me wrong: I totally approve!
Charlie flashback episode.
Perhaps he’ll die this episode.
His only purpose lately seems to be to hanging lampshades.
I suppose Charlie’s death would count as a mystery that’s been dangled all season.
The purpose of his death, anyway.
So, current end-of-season theories:
-We meet Jacob
-They get (somehow) to the boat off-shore
-Charlie dies.
Question that I haven’t really thought of before:
-Why are the Others so anti-these guys getting off the Island?
Why does Sayid know where “The Looking Glass” is?
I don’t, and I’ve been watching everyone’s actions, not just his.
(“The Looking Glass” is another Dharma station. I quite like the Dharma stations name. Not as good as my “Alpha/Beta etc” names tho.)
Why is Charlie’s death instrumental to everyone getting off the Island? Unless he dies and falls onto an alert button or something…
Prediction: Charlie’s Dad doesn’t catch him.
I’m about 90% convinced that Charlie will die by the end of the season, but Lost subverts like no show I’ve seen before.
(except House)
(House remains the king of subversions)
I suppose Charlie could get up to the stage that Desmond’s vision describes and then refuse to die/save everyone…
…but that seems uncharacteristically selfish/dickish of him.
Oh!
Sayid knows about the Looking Glass because of the electrical plans.
Oooh, excellent justification of the cable from the first season. (the cable that led them to Crazy Danielle.)
Watching shows like this make me superaware of my past and future self.
eg I can never go back to NOT knowing about the cable’s purpose.
I mean, that’s an extremely shallow example, but it’s still an example.
One day, all the mysteries on Lost will make sense to me.
My future self is aware of the meaning behind everything, my past self still has no idea.
I dunno. Makes me think.
Meanwhile, on the show, the attack has been moved from tomorrow night to tonight.
Clever heightening of the risks.
I love, by the way, that we see things from the Others’ POV as well.
Admittedly, only because of Carl, but it’s still cool.
(“Carl” is Alex’s beau.)
That’s where he’s been all this time; hiding out, being fed by his girl.
I think love is a lot easier when there’s ridiculous risks/circumstances/chance of death.
You don’t have to think “Can I stand this person for 40 years?”
I love Sayid, but he’s only ever brought in for war-related reasons.
Torture, clever explosion plans, etc…
Bring him in for love, Lost!
Thus far this episode, Charlie’s flashbacks are pointless.
I mean, sure, nice to give him a flashback episode as if he’s going to die, but there’s so much happening and this is so irrelevant.
A LOT of stuff is pointing towards Charlie’s death.
Setting up this ring to be handed on, pointless flashbacks, list of best moments…
#3 – the Christmas that Frodo gave me the ring!
Awww! Charlie just called the baby “Turnip-head”.
Now they’re layering it on a bit thick.
I’m down to about 65% Charlie dies.
There are surprisingly few kisses on this show.
Charlie/Clare just kissed, but it’d still be in the first 20 kisses of the show’s run.
Charlie’s got a flashback – it looked like it was going to be a shared flashback with Desmond
Wasn’t.
Then I thought it was going to be a shared flashback with Naomi. (being mugged)
Nope. Flashbacks still pointless.
Bernard is a crack shot.
That’s a hastily-written justification that I’m entirely okay with!
Reasons Charlie might die:
-flashback showing that he’s a hero
-hastily-written introduction of ring
-pointless flashbacks
Reasons Charlie might live:
-they’ve layered it on way too thick. It’s suddenly become too obvious and formulaic.
-I like him lots.
Seriously though, Charlie’s a pretty popular character.
That could work either way: he’s unlikely to be killed because of it…
…but on the other hand, it would justify all the build-up to his death. I’m at about 50/50 now. Could go either way!
My money’s on him living.
Meanwhile, the “blow up the Others” plan seems like a season-ender, but it’s way too far away from the EOS.
Blech. I hate sand. Really glad I don’t live on the Island.
(as well as for the other reasons I have discussed.)
Oh-oh. Charlie flashback brings us to the beginning of his time on the Island.
That is not a good sign. He’s much more likely to die.
And there’s slow music playing.
But…no!
It’s too obvious.
Meanwhile, Charlie is being hilarious in his flashback.
He’s getting Most likeable.
Another good reason for Charlie’s death: he seems to have no strong tie to the Island like the current, living characters.
If there’s one thing we’ve learned from Boom and Shannon, it’s that you need a good, ongoing backstory to survive this show.
Desmond’s all “I’ll go instead.” That won’t work at all.
Silly plan, Desmond. Come up with a better one.
Send Jack.
Don’t get me wrong, I like Jack, but he’s been a bit of a prick lately.
Hey, cool!
Charlie hit Demond with a paddle.
Go Charlie!
Moment of truth.
My money’s still on Charlie living, but it seriously doesn’t seem at all likely.
Although they can’t actually escape…
The underwater base is my new favourite place on the Island.
Surely they spent too much on this set to just use it this once.
Episode end. I have three excited comments to make.
1) I was right!
2) EXCELLENT subversion! Should never have doubted you, Lost!
3) AWESOME! People living underwater! Original Dharma people? Weirdtopians? A new, unrelated group? Who knows??
AWESOME!
Okay okay.
Most Likeable: Charlie.
Least Likeable: Jack.
Most Intriguing: Underwater Inhatchibants!! So cool!
Theories:
-the Underwater Inhatchibants (henceforth referred to as “amphibs” until they get names) are Others. (obvious)
-Charlie’s button that Desmond saw him press turns off whatever keeps the water out.
That’s why he drowns, destroying the base.
Oh crap!
Just remembered: Juliet was unaware of the amphibs’ existence.
Hmm. Going to put that down to Benry’s lies.
My theories are still valid. Predictions!
-Jack’s “kill the Others” plan works.
-they don’t get rescued…well, maybe a few,but not many.
People who def don’t get rescued:
-Jack
-Kate
-Sawyer
-Hurley
-Locke (is he dead? we haven’t seen him lately! :()
-Charlie
-Desmond
People who have a chance of getting rescued:
-Clare
-Turnip-head Ulrich
-Rose
-Bernard
-Naomi
-I can’t think of any other Castaways.
Actually, while I’m listing people, Island deaths:
-Boom
-Shannon
-Eko
-Eyepatch’s g/f
-Libby
-Anna
-various Others
-Martial/Marshall
-Locke?
I mean, if you’re counting flashback deaths, most of the Dharma Initiative were killed off by the Hostiles. Oh!
-VHE
-Dirk.
I feel as though a recap of my nicknames is in order!
VHE = Very Hot Extra, the chick from the Expose episode.
Dirk the Dick was her boyfriend, Paulo.
Turnip-head Ulrich is Aaron
Eyepatch is (obviously) the man with the eyepatch
Boom is Boone
And “The Inhatchibant” is Desmond.
Benry is Ben
Alex’s Beau is Carl
The Weirdtopians is another name for the Others
Weirdtopia is the prison (also known as “The Isle”)
Suburbtopia is the Others’ main base.
I adore Locke, get excited by mentions of polar bears, and hate irrelevant flashbacks.
